What is now known as St. Joseph’s Home for Children was Catholic Charities’ first program in the Twin Cities, formed in 1869 as the St. Joseph’s German Catholic Orphan Society. With staffing provided by members of the Benedictine order in the early days and serving youth left parentless by the dangers of pioneer life, the Civil War and pandemics, the Society opened the first St. Joseph’s German Catholic Orphan Asylum in Saint Paul in 1877. Our main campus hosts our residential cottages, respite center and our community home while our two adult day programs are located nearby in Sharonville and Blue Ash.

Over the years, Vikings players and volunteers would show up to play with kids or help celebrate birthdays and other milestones. Because there are many different needs, we have multiple types of programs to support our families. At St. Joseph’s, each family gets their own private bedroom space – with a lockable door. Families share the common living space as well as responsibilities for the maintenance and governance of their floor, in preparation for the day when they will be living independently. St Joseph's Home, Croydon, run by the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, was established in 1925. It was intended for the care of boys and girls aged three to seven years who were defined as orphans, neglected and destitute. St Joseph's Home amalgamated with St Anthony's Croydon at the end of 1979 and the remaining children were moved into foster care in St Joseph's Cottages. The Temporary Care Unit (formerly 'Karingal') provided emergency care for up to 3 months to children aged 12 months to 12 years. The Catholic Family Welfare Bureau referred children to the Temporary Care Unit and provided any further family support or placements.
